About This Piece
The Russian word podstakannik means roughly "under the glass": the metal holder with a handle let people drink very hot tea from a thin glass without burning their fingers. Tea served in glass holders became a famous part of Soviet train travel and remains a symbol of the era. Aluminum versions are light and resistant to rust, and designs featuring the state symbols of the Soviet Union are a favorite with collectors of Soviet kitchenware and Eastern European history. This podstakannik works equally well as a display piece or for an authentic glass of tea.
