Desk & Smoking Accessories
Soviet desk sets, gas lighters, pen holders, pencils and letter openers: small office and smoking pieces with factory marks and award inscriptions where present.
Desk and smoking items in stock
The Soviet desk set is a classic gift and this category holds several. A 1971 desk set pen holder from Tula carries a Komsomol award inscription, and a DniproHES set commemorates the Dnieper Hydroelectric Station. Others: a cast metal Mephistopheles pencil holder, a desktop composition called Beat Swords into Plowshares, a letter opener with colored handle and a perpetual flip desk calendar from Odessa. Smoking accessories include a ZG20 gas lighter from the Leningrad Lenemalier factory, a brass gas lighter with the Ukrainian trident and a marbled carbolite-style table lighter from 1960.
There are also two boxes of Kosmos and Start pencils, new old stock from Slovyansk.
What to look for
Check inscriptions and factory names, which can date a desk set. Lighters should be checked for the flint wheel, the gas valve and the body finish, and I say whether they are tested or sold for display. Ashtrays and cigarette cases appear from time to time, so check back.
For desk sets, moving parts and missing pieces matter. I list what is included and what is not.

Pen sets sit well with porcelain and decor and kitchenware and glass. More in home decor. Small desk pieces are packed carefully, so heavy cast items arrive without scratches from loose parts in the box.

Do the lighters work?
Each listing says whether the lighter was tested or is for display. Gas lighters may need refilling.
What does the desk set inscription mean?
Many Soviet desk sets were souvenirs or awards, for example for Komsomol or a hydroelectric station, and the inscription is described in the listing.
