About this piece

From the seller's notes

This Soviet porcelain spa cup is a traditional mineral water drinking cup made in the USSR (Ukraine) as a souvenir of the Myrhorod health resort. The front shows a detailed portrait illustration and signature of the writer Nikolai Gogol, while the back carries the name of the resort town Myrhorod (Миргород) with a landscape emblem. Fine white porcelain with gilt accents along the rim and handle gives it a classic, elegant look.

About This Piece

At Soviet health resorts, visitors drank mineral water straight from the pump room using special spa cups like this one, and the resort towns sold them as souvenirs. Myrhorod in central Ukraine is known for its mineral springs and is closely linked to Nikolai Gogol, who titled his 1835 story collection Mirgorod after the town. A Soviet porcelain spa cup with a Gogol portrait combines resort history and literary heritage, making it a charming addition to a collection of vintage Soviet porcelain or Ukrainian souvenirs, or a distinctive accent for Soviet home decor.
