About This Piece

The schoty, the Russian abacus, was used for everyday calculations in Soviet shops, offices, warehouses and schools for decades, often right alongside early electronic calculators. Unlike East Asian abacuses, the Russian version has horizontal rods with ten beads each, with contrasting beads in the middle of the row to make counting quicker. Today a vintage Soviet abacus is a nostalgic reminder of the era of paper ledgers and shop counters, and a tactile, conversation-starting object for a desk or shelf.
