About This Piece

Palekh is a village in central Russia that became famous in the Soviet period for its lacquer miniatures, painted on papier-mache boxes with fine detail and gold highlights. The style draws on the village's older icon-painting tradition and often depicts fairy tales and folk scenes. A small Palekh lacquer box like this one is ideal for storing rings or earrings, or for displaying as a decorative piece.
