About This Piece
In the Soviet Union the decorated tree was the centerpiece of New Year celebrations, and holiday decorations often reflected the spirit of the times. After the launch of Sputnik in 1957 and Yuri Gagarin's flight in 1961, space became one of the most popular themes in Soviet design, from toys and badges to tree ornaments and lights. A rocket-themed garland like Kosmos captures that optimism of the Space Race era. These Soviet Christmas lights appeal both to collectors of vintage Soviet Christmas ornaments and to fans of Soviet space memorabilia, and they make a striking accent for a retro holiday display.
