About This Piece

Filigree, called skan in Russian and Ukrainian, is a traditional craft of twisting and soldering fine metal wire into lace-like patterns. In the Soviet period, local industry workshops applied it to boxes, caskets and souvenirs, and the OTK stamp was the factory's quality-control mark. The red velvet interior is ready to hold rings, earrings or small keepsakes, making this a practical vanity piece as well as a collectible of Ukrainian Soviet-era decorative art.
