Condition

Very good vintage condition for its age. The velvet has kept its rich crimson color and the embroidery is vibrant and intact. There are minor signs of age: light handling marks, minor stains and soiling on the velvet and natural creases, including a small darkened area shown in the last photo. There are no major rips, holes or significant damage. For the exact size, see the photos taken with a tape measure.

About This Piece

Banners like this were handed to the winners of production competitions, and this one names a flax growing competition run by the agricultural ministry and the agricultural workers' union. Flax was an important crop in the USSR. Hand embroidery on thick velvet gives the banner a texture that printed flags do not have, and its size makes it a statement piece for collectors of Soviet memorabilia, historical flags and ceremonial textiles.
