About this piece

Soviet navy star globe ZG with horizon ring, altitude circle and Steklograf pencils in the original wooden box with packing list. Free shipping.

From the seller's notes

This is a Soviet marine star globe "ZG" (Звёздный глобус) – a navigator's instrument used on ships of the USSR Navy and merchant fleet to identify stars for celestial navigation. The yellow celestial sphere shows the stars and constellations with Latin names on a coordinate grid. It sits in a graduated metal horizon ring marked with the compass points, under a metal altitude circle, and comes in its original wooden storage box.

About This Piece

Star globes like this were standard equipment on Soviet ships: the navigator set the globe for the ship's latitude and time and read which stars would be visible and where. Complete sets in the original box are sought after by collectors of maritime and astronomy instruments, and make a striking display piece for a study or office.
