About This Piece
The title Hero City was given in the Soviet Union to cities recognized for their resistance during the Second World War, and Kyiv was among those honored. Badges that reference Hero Cities are therefore linked to war commemoration as well as to local pride, which gives them historical weight for collectors. Aluminum was commonly used for mass-produced Soviet pins because it is light and easy to stamp. The 15k marking is a detail that can help when comparing this badge with others in the same series. For collectors of Ukrainian SSR memorabilia, a Kyiv Hero City pin is an easy way to represent the capital of the republic in a pin collection, and it can be shown beside other city and republic badges. Its aluminum body keeps it light, so it sits comfortably on a jacket or a pin board.
