This vintage bakelite ball is a sphere of heavy Bakelite (Catalin) in a rich cherry red or burgundy color with lighter red marbled swirls. It measures about 6.5 cm (2.5 in) across and weighs 253 g, so it feels solid in the hand. It was made in the USSR and can serve as a decorative ball or a paperweight.

Condition
Overall good vintage condition. The surface keeps a pleasant shine but shows expected signs of age: scratches, light scuffs, dents and minor pitting. A chemical swab check for bakelite was done, and the result is shown in a photo. Please examine all of the close-up photos for the condition details.
About This Piece
Bakelite was one of the first fully synthetic plastics, and Catalin is the cast version that was colored in strong marbled shades such as red. Cast spheres like this are collected for their color and their weight, and the swirl pattern makes each one different. This piece has the casting line along the equator that is typical of the process, and it suits collectors of vintage plastics and Art Deco style objects.
