About This Piece
The sailing events of the 1980 Summer Olympics were held in Tallinn, which is why badges for this sport carry the name of that city and not Moscow alone. Soviet makers issued many pins for the Games, each with a sport or theme, and collectors often build sets by discipline. A single sailing pin is a good entry point to Olympic and Soviet badge collecting. Sailing took place away from the main Moscow venues, so the Tallinn badge is a regional variant that many general Olympic pin sets lack. Estonia was part of the USSR at the time. Sailing pins are popular with both Olympic collectors and people who gather nautical themed badges, so this small piece appeals to two groups at once.
