About This Piece

This coat belongs to the Ukrainian military tradition that grew out of Soviet-era uniform patterns: the long wool greatcoat with a fur collar is a classic of the Soviet-style senior officer wardrobe, and the Trident buttons mark it as Ukrainian rather than Soviet. Astrakhan collars, made from the curly pelts of karakul lambs, were a mark of rank and were chosen for warmth in hard winters. Unworn coats of this kind are not often seen, and it can serve as a collector's uniform, a display piece or a heavy winter coat for a person of matching size.
