About This Piece

Lacquer miniatures from Palekh and Mstera are among the best-known Russian folk crafts, painted by hand in small, fine detail. The Tale of Tsar Saltan is a popular subject taken from a verse fairy tale. A dated box with a clean working lid suits a display of Russian lacquer art or Soviet decorative objects. The box is small, about the size of a hand, so it can hold small keepsakes such as rings or buttons. Handmade boxes from the 1950s that retain their gold decoration are especially pleasant to display open or closed.
