About this piece

Soviet ceramic horse figurine in glossy honey-brown majolica glaze, about 9.5 in tall, 1970s-1980s Ukrainian folk art style. Ships worldwide from Ukraine.

From the seller's notes

This Soviet ceramic horse figurine is a stylized folk-art animal with a prominent curved mane and tail, decorated with embossed spiral and geometric patterns. It was made in the USSR around the 1970s-1980s and is finished in a rich, glossy majolica glaze in warm honey-brown and amber tones. It resembles the Ukrainian Oposnya and Vasilyovka majolica traditions.

About This Piece

Ukrainian majolica from Oposnya and Vasilyovka is known for bold shapes and warm glazes, and animal figures are a typical subject. The attribution here is given as likely, not certain. The figure works well on a shelf or mantel, especially in interiors that favor mid-century or folk-art accents. The glossy amber glaze catches the light well, and the embossed spiral details are easiest to appreciate in person. The figurine is a solid size for a mantel, sideboard or bookshelf, and it pairs naturally with other Soviet ceramics, wood and textiles. The height was measured from the photo to the top of the mane, so allow a little variation in size.
