About this piece

Vintage Soviet desktop composition 'Let Us Beat Swords into Plowshares': gold-tone smith, three brass shell-casing holders, 806 g. Ships from Ukraine.

From the seller's notes

This Soviet desktop composition, "Let Us Beat Swords into Plowshares", is a souvenir inspired by the famous sculpture by Evgeny Vuchetich, showing a powerful smith forging a sword into a plowshare as a symbol of the move from war to peace. The gold-tone metal figure and anvil sit on a heavy dark carbolite (bakelite) base with three integrated brass shell casings that serve as pen, pencil or brush holders. The base bears an embossed quote in Russian about Tula, which points to a souvenir from that city.

About This Piece

Vuchetich's bronze "Let Us Beat Swords into Plowshares" was given to the United Nations in 1959 and is one of the best-known Soviet sculptures, so small desk versions like this were natural souvenirs. Tula is famous for its arms factories and metalwork, which gives the shell-casing holders a local meaning. At 806 g it is a solid paperweight and statement piece for a desk, and it suits collectors of Soviet industrial art and desk accessories.
