About this piece

Soviet jewelry box by Karbolit: black Bakelite, red velvet lining and a working wind-up music movement. Ships worldwide from Ukraine with tracking.

From the seller's notes

This Soviet jewelry box is a vintage musical box made in the USSR by the Karbolit plant in Orekhovo-Zuyevo, crafted from deep black Bakelite (carbolite) with brass-colored metal accents in an elegant neoclassical design. After winding, it plays a melody when the lid is opened, and the red velvet interior is divided into two compartments for rings, watches or small trinkets.

About This Piece

Bakelite, one of the earliest synthetic plastics, gave mid-century Soviet household goods a glossy, durable finish, and the Karbolit plant in Orekhovo-Zuyevo was a well-known producer of such plastic products. With its working music movement and velvet-lined compartments, this Soviet jewelry box is both a practical dressing-table piece and an attractive find for collectors of vintage Soviet design and music boxes.
