About this piece

Soviet AMT-47 cast iron payphone with Bakelite handset and brass emergency plate, sold as-is for restoration. Ships worldwide from Ukraine with tracking.

From the seller's notes

This Soviet payphone is an AMT-47, a heavy cast iron wall-mounted coin telephone developed in 1947 and used as a street phone during the late Stalin and early Khrushchev periods. The industrial gray-green body shows natural patina and rust spots, and the piece has a rugged, almost steampunk look.

Condition

Sold for parts or as defective, as a collectible or restoration project. Used, with significant signs of wear: the metal housing has rust, paint chips and scratches consistent with age and outdoor use. The phone is untested and sold as-is for display, restoration, use as a prop or spare parts. A wooden mounting block from a previous installation is attached to the back. The payphone has not been opened, so its internal contents are unknown, and there is no key to the lock.

About This Piece

Street payphones were part of everyday life in Soviet cities, and their heavy cast housings were built to be exposed to the weather. The brass emergency plate and the dial make this a characteristic piece for collectors of vintage communications equipment, and for decorators who like industrial interior elements.
