About This Piece
The Kommunar plant in Kharkiv began in 1927 as a labor commune led by the educator Anton Makarenko and went on to produce onboard control systems for rockets, launch vehicles and spacecraft, including the Molniya and Soyuz programs, as well as electronics for aircraft. The Makarenko quotation on the reverse says that years and changes will pass, and a new generation of Communards will continue the work they began. Note that the medal itself dates from 1997, after the Soviet era, so it is best described as a commemorative piece about Soviet-era space industry. It will interest collectors of space exploration items, rocketry and industrial history.
